Meet the Learning Champions

Learning champions come from all walks of life.  They may have struggled with learning themselves or they may have retired from the teaching profession.  However, they all promote learning because they believe in the opportunities learning offers and have a desire to share this with others. See some of their stories below.

BCT Training Learning Champions

Learning Champion, Manjeet Matharou, joined the Adult Learner Support Course at Matthew Boulton College in January 2008 and did her placement at our Handsworth Learning for Life Project, helping with the Family Learning Programme and the ESOL group.
Manjeet enjoyed the experience so much that she is now training at Wolverhampton University as a ‘Skills for Life’ teacher.  We are fortunate that she has decided to stay with us at Handsworth to gain further experience of teaching, working alongside our Co-ordinating Tutor.

Birmingham Churches Together Co-ordinating Tutor, Susan Musyoka, has recently been appointed to work full time in order to develop the Learning for Life Project at Handsworth.

Susan worked as a primary school teacher in Kenya before coming to the United Kingdom.  She began as a volunteer support worker whilst studying to become a ‘Skills for Life’ Teacher.  She is pursuing her vocation with BCT and is dedicated to working with isolated and hard to reach families in Handsworth and beyond.

Like Manjeet, Cynthia Pinnock, joined the Adult Learner Support Programme at Matthew Boulton College in January 2008.  Cynthia supported learners at the Contact ESOL group in Handsworth and continues to use her skills as she works with adults who have mental health and learning difficulties.
